EXPERIENCE THe Island of Marstrand

In the far west, where the archipelago ends and the sea begins, lies the unique Marstrand Island.

HIKING ON MARSTRAND

Marstrand has fantastic hiking trails that take you all the way around the island.
Pack a picnic and enjoy the view of the sea that surrounds the island.
Choose the more advanced trail with stairs and cliffs or why not a little calmer walk adapted for strollers.
Turn off the trails to visit places such as Nålsögat, a narrow passage between two boulders on the way out to Skallens lighthouse.

CARLSTEN FORTRESS

Carlsten’s Fortress rises mightily above the capital of sailing.
Long ago, there were pirates and privateers here, the infamous grand thief Lasse-Maja was imprisoned in the fortress, and herring barons and merchants built large houses with punch verandas and carpenter’s delight.
For over 350 years, Carlsten Fortress has been the landmark of Marstrand Island, shaping the island’s life, silhouette and history.
The fortress is well preserved and reflects the time that has gone by.
Take a guided tour and experience the historical stories along winding tunnels, dungeons and tower rooms.

ACTIVITIES

On Marstrand you will find activities that suits everyone.
For the adventurous, it is possible to book a RIB boat where you are taken on a fast-paced adventure at sea.
Taxi boat is also a popular option for those who want to explore Marstrand’s archipelago a little closer, why not a trip out to Pater Noster.
If you’re looking for more physical activity, there are kayak and SUP rentals and further inland there are golf courses.
Sneaking into the small shops on Marstrand Island is also recommended.
Around the island there are nice swimming spots, maybe you dare to try the popular nude bath on the southwest part of the island with a secluded rock area and separate changing for ladies and gentlemen.

DINNER & FOOD

During your stay on Marstrand, it can be good to have some food and on the island there are several fine restaurants for lunch and dinner.
Located next to Marstrands Kurhotell you will find Societetshusets porch which offers a tasty a la carte with a fine wine menu.
Right by the ferry dock you will find LasseMajas tavern which serves something for all tastes with cooking inspired by the world.
In the Paradise Garden you will find restaurant Tenan, which serves classic and modern dishes.
Johans Krog, on the way up to Carlstens Fortress, resembles a French bistro with elements from the west coast.
If you want to buy some coffee and sit down by the quay, Bergs cafe makes fine pastries and good sandwiches.

HOW TO GET TO MARSTRANDS KURHOTELL

About 40 minutes north of Gothenburg is Marstrand Island. From the Marstrand ferry terminal, the ferry (line 322) between Koön and Marstrand runs regularly around the clock and it only takes 2 minutes to cross. On Marstrands Island, turn right after the ferry terminal and walk along the quay to the north and you will arrive at Marstrands Kurhotell after a short walk.
